Chris Mayo is native of Durham North Carolina. Mayo was born July 30, 1991 at Duke Hospital. Born to Syonne Mayo and Bright Ibokwe as his biological parents, his father left his life before Mayo was born. Because of his mother's mental condition, Mayo wasn't able to have a relationship with her, and he was raised by his grandparents, Lizzie and Clarence Mayo Sr.
Mayo began writing poetry at the young age of eleven when his grandfather passed away. It was the only way he knew to express himself as sixth grader. Today, Chris Mayo aspires to be a famous film actor. As well as acting he also will a poet and well-known motivational speaker around the Durham community.
Chris Mayo believes that’s important to get to the top, but bringing a ladder for someone to get there is better. You may recognize Mayo in his roles at Hillside such as “King Dredon” in CinderAH, “Samuel David” in Martin Said So, “Lumiere” in Beauty and the Beast, and “Solomon Gedney” in A Woman Called Truth. Mayo currently plays the role of “Curtis Jones” in the play Mississippi Mourning: The Emmett Till Story. He is enrolled in the BFA Acting program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, which only 11 students out of 60 who audition get accepted a year. Post-graduating, Mayo went on to win the state branch of the NAACP ACT-SO COMPETITION. Moving on to Nationals Mayo went to New York City to compete with other poets and other African American talent across the country for a chance to earn a $50,000 scholarship. Mayo was the first in ACT-SO history to host the NAACP ACT-SO AWARDS in July 2009. As well as an actor, mayo is a poet. He has performed poetry in Durham, Hickory, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Greensboro North Carolina and New York City. He has appeared on Christopher “Play” Martin’s TV newscast Brand Newz several times and appeared on WRAL’s Tar Heel Talk with the NAACP Durham Branch Chair Thomas Poole. Chris is now currently nominated to receive Student Visionary of the Year Award in June 2010.
